An upgrade that does not reset the chassis
Framework announced the new Laptop 12 generation on August 18 with Intel Core Series 3 processors. The company says the mainboard, optional fingerprint reader and backlit input cover can be installed in the original Laptop 12 rather than requiring a new enclosure, display or battery.
That compatibility is the editorial centre of the story. A modular computer is only meaningfully upgradeable when replacement parts arrive, fit earlier machines and remain documented. Availability and total upgrade cost still need to be checked by region before LUMACTA NEWS can judge the practical value.
New ports, replaceable parts and a Fedora option
The two rear Expansion Card slots now support Thunderbolt 4, while the front pair remain USB 3.2 Gen 2; all four accept charging power. Framework lists a single upgradeable DDR5-6400 SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 64GB, modular M.2 2230 NVMe storage up to 2TB and a replaceable Intel BE213 Wi-Fi 7 module.
At announcement, Framework said prebuilt Core 5 and Core 7 configurations could ship with Fedora 44 KDE Plasma. Its current product page lists a Fedora preinstalled option, while its Linux compatibility page remains version-specific. Framework says distributions for the new hardware need Linux kernel 7.1 or newer; the exact Fedora version must be rechecked at release.
A 70 percent battery claim is not an independent result
Framework reports up to 70 percent longer Netflix 4K streaming battery life in its July 2026 Core 5 320 test versus the original Core i5-1334U generation; LUMACTA NEWS has not independently reproduced the result. The company also makes performance and efficiency comparisons with other processors in its range.
LUMACTA NEWS has not reproduced those tests. Workload, display settings, software versions, battery condition and power profiles can materially change a result, so the figure remains a manufacturer measurement until an independent, repeatable test is available.
What the photograph establishes
The real photograph shows the original Framework Laptop 12 folded into tablet mode. It establishes the form factor and the chassis that Framework says can accept the new parts; it does not show or prove Core Series 3 performance.
The image was released by its creator under CC0. The local derivative is a documentary crop and resize with no generated content, added labels or cosmetic reconstruction.
