Leica introduced the SL3-P on June 25, 2026, as a hybrid L-Mount camera aimed at professional stills and video production. The company said the camera would be available worldwide from that day at a recommended retail price of €5,990 including VAT. That figure is launch guidance, not a current street price or a guarantee of stock in every market.

The camera uses a 45.8-megapixel total, 44.9-megapixel effective full-frame CMOS sensor that Leica describes as BSI, and offers a 176.7-megapixel Multishot mode. Leica lists a manual photo ISO range of 50–200,000; video ranges vary by profile. Its 819 phase-detection autofocus points support continuous shooting at up to 40fps with AFc using the electronic shutter at 12-bit. Leica's published buffer figures were measured with Content Credentials switched off.

Leica's detailed June 2026 video table lists internal 8K Open Gate MOV recording at 8064×5376 in 3:2 at 24.00p or 23.98p. It separately lists 6K 5888×3312 recording up to 59.94p, 4K up to 120p, internal ProRes up to 5760×3040 and 8K Open Gate RAW output over HDMI. Available codecs, bit depth, crop, autofocus and storage options vary by mode. These are manufacturer specifications, not LUMACTA NEWS test results.

One capture, several delivery formats

Open Gate matters less as a headline resolution than as a framing option. Recording the larger 3:2 sensor area can leave room to derive horizontal, vertical and square versions from one take, provided the production protects important action across those crops. It can reduce the need to repeat a scene for every platform, but it also increases storage, processing and monitoring demands.

Through its Camera-to-Cloud integration, the SL3-P can upload DNG or JPEG stills and proxy video directly to a Frame.io project over Wi-Fi. Uploads can be automatic or selected manually. Proxy-video upload requires both a CFexpress Type B card and an SD card, with proxy recording enabled; the camera cannot maintain Leica FOTOS and Frame.io connections at the same time. The practical value still depends on network reliability, transfer speed, battery use and recovery from interrupted uploads.

For still images, Leica Content Credentials can optionally add a signed C2PA provenance record containing camera-specific data and creator-entered attribution fields. Compatible tools can test whether the attached credential and its binding to the file validate, and can show edits recorded by Content Credential-aware tools. Starting that record in the camera is useful, but the record may later be incomplete or removed.

Provenance is not a truth detector

Content Credentials can help establish whether attached provenance data validates and whether recorded changes have been preserved. They cannot determine whether a scene was staged, whether a caption is accurate, whether important context sits outside the frame or whether the credential history is complete. Metadata can also be stripped from a file.

That distinction matters for journalism. A valid credential is useful evidence about a file's history; it does not replace source verification, reporting, corroboration or editorial judgment. LUMACTA NEWS will describe this system as tamper-evident provenance, not as proof that an image is factually true.

What remains untested

LUMACTA NEWS has not independently tested image quality, rolling shutter, autofocus, transfer reliability, battery life or sustained recording. Leica says recording duration depends on storage and sensor temperature and gives typical times at 25°C of about 20 minutes for 8K/30, 25 minutes for 6K/30 and 30 minutes for 4K/30. Those duration examples refer to separate 16:9 recording modes, not the 8064×5376 3:2 Open Gate mode, which Leica's detailed table lists at up to 24p. The end-to-end provenance path also needs testing through ordinary edits, exports, content-management systems and social platforms.

Leica's downloads page listed firmware 4.2.2 at the August 30, 2026 fact-check snapshot. Its release notes say the update fixes a continuous-shooting write error that could prevent every frame in a sequence from being saved under some conditions. Firmware, price and availability can change and must be rechecked before any buying recommendation.
